Happiness through Transcendental Meditation

Personal Consultation
Anushka Sharma

Since the mind is a very powerful tool and is constantly at work, it’s very important to give it rest. Meditation works wonders for me when it comes to beating stress. I meditate twice a day, once early morning and once before going to bed at night. It has a calming effect which translates into better health.

The mind naturally attracts greater happiness and peace. The practice of Transcendental Meditation allows us to move towards greater happiness and peace without effort, in a completely natural way.

We will experience the strengthening of inner peace, if we make the calming effect of Transcendental Meditation part of our daily routine. This is similar to how we used to dye the fabric:

They dipped it in the dye, then placed it in the sun, and repeated this until the fabric was completely colored. Similarly, by alternating TM with our other activities, we can quickly reach a state where stress can no longer overshadow our lives. No matter what problems we face, our mind maintains its balance in every situation.

The purpose of life is happiness

Whatever our work may be or however we spend our free time, the ultimate driving force is the pursuit of happiness. It is very easy to think that happiness depends on what is happening around us, but in reality, what matters is how we feel inside.

90% of experiencing long-term inner happiness does not depend on our environment, but rather on how our brain processes our experiences." - Dr. Shawn Achor, psychologist and specialist in the relationship between happiness and success.

Human relationships are merely reflections of our own happiness or lack thereof. We can blame others or pretend to be someone else, but our behavior and actions inevitably reflect how we feel inside.

Effect of happiness hormones

True happiness originates in the brain.

Although happiness is a subjective experience, it is possible to measure the hormonal changes occurring in the brain. Numerous scientific studies have shown that happiness and our self-esteem contribute to our health and quality of life. Happiness is the antidote to addiction. Our serotonin levels significantly decrease as a result of chronic stress.

Research from the Vienna Neurochemical Institute indicated that the concentration of happiness hormones increased by 50% after completing Transcendental Meditation.

Let the meditation be part of your daily routine!

When the calming effect of Transcendental Meditation becomes part of our daily routine, our lives are filled with circumstances-independent happiness. Everything is driven by our innate life force. This is stronger than any stress, trauma, disappointment, or unhappiness we have encountered in our lives. It is very gentle, but very powerful. During Transcendental Meditation, our mind automatically reaches the source of happiness, because our mind is naturally inclined to do so.

Effect of deep rest

Mental health, trauma

During Transcendental Meditation, even the deepest traumatic stress can dissolve. A recent study in the Iraqi War veteran community showed a 50% reduction in PTSD (post-traumatic stress syndrome) and depression after just 8 weeks of TM practice.

The results were so fantastic that CNN even made a short film about it on Veteran's Day. The stress of war veterans is much deeper than that of the average person. If TM can help in such traumatic cases, then we can see that it can help everyone.

Constant happiness

This is a natural way to help our nervous system restore both our mind and body to normal functioning. The inappropriate habits, the accumulated stress and tension, indifference and unhealthy habits are gradually replaced by behaviors that support our lives and promote growth and fulfillment.

We are all different and have had various experiences throughout our lives. Therefore, our personal experiences with Transcendental Meditation may vary, but we can all draw from our true inner selves, enriching and blossoming our lives in the process.

Transcendental Meditation is not merely a relaxation technique, nor is it about controlling or directing the mind. We do not attempt to live in the present moment or change our attitudes. There is no need to believe in it or impose a new value system upon ourselves.

Effect of deep rest

A deeper form of rest

When the mind transcends and naturally reaches a state of pure inner silence, the body spontaneously enters a very deep state of relaxation, resting much deeper than in deep sleep. This can be objectively measured by the rate of oxygen consumption in the body.

Research from the Vienna Neurochemical Institute indicated that the concentration of happiness hormones increased by 50% after completing Transcendental Meditation.

This chart, derived from a study conducted at Harvard University, highlights that during TM, the body enters a state of rest that is twice as deep as the deepest state of sleep.

The State of Restful Alertness

Transcendental Meditation allows the nervous system to achieve a uniquely deep state of rest, much deeper than ordinary relaxation or various forms of rest. This deep rest is referred to as the fourth state of consciousness, distinct from waking, sleeping, or dreaming states. Throughout different ages and cultures, some individuals have accidentally experienced this for short periods. This experience is the true foundation of inner happiness, wisdom, understanding, and self-realization - in other words, enlightenment.

We can call this Transcendental Consciousness, as it transcends everything. It goes beyond perception, thought, understanding, the most refined feelings, and even self-awareness.

Transcendental Meditation is not only a simple relaxation technique, nor is it about controlling or directing the mind. We do not attempt to live in the present moment or change our attitudes. There is no need to believe in it or impose a new value system upon ourselves.

We can even experience this in the first days of learning Transcendental Meditation. Transcending is the complete calming of the mind. When the right conditions are present, this is a completely natural process. It is like when the large waves on the sea gradually become smaller until the sea becomes calm.

This is the simplest thing we can do. Even a 5-year-old child can practice it perfectly. We do not need to acquire new skills or adopt a new attitude towards things. It is simply about providing an ideal environment for the physical and mental changes within us to occur.

After learning Transcendental Meditation, I no longer felt exhausted or drained after two daily sessions. My body was deeply regenerated. I felt like I had slept for an entire week.
